A serious book lover since toddlerhood, Kelly fell hard for letterpress while studying for her MFA at California College of Arts and Crafts. She'd wandered into a book arts seminar, and not too long after setting her first lead type, she was hooked. Now she takes cues from the environment – the rugged landscapes, affected by Hurricane Irene in Vermont were particularly inspiring – Kelly spent hours upon hours carving linoleum blocks from her tiny pen-and-ink sketches, before printing. And each piece of wrapping paper is printed individually, a time-consuming process that Kelly says is well worth it. Her final pieces are textual and visual, certainly worth a thousand words, we'd say, and that's well on the way to book territory.
