To craft their unique 3D wood maps, the process for husband-and-wife team Joe and Karly is a touch more high-tech than most. The duo first study sonar and geographic mapping surveys to ensure their maps are made to scale and include accurate underwater depth contours—known as bathymetry to geo nerds—to lend a unique three-dimensional effect. Once designed, their creations come to life in the form of birch wood that’s seared at the edges and layered into formation using a variety of hand tools, routers and laser cutters (not to mention a precise hand and creative eye) to carve out a view like you’ve never seen. Even if you’ve been to the place a million times before.
