Some people say they were grandfathered into their craft—but Mark means it quite literally. Both his dad and his grandpa were leather craftsmen, so he grew up surrounded by the rich, tobacco smell and clanking tools. Though the craft was certainly in his lifeblood, it wasn’t until he was 18, when he made his first bag, that he was hooked. As a young artist, Mark wanted to carry his paint and his camera everywhere (yeah, that’s when you were carrying Pearl Jam “10” everywhere you went), but couldn’t find the right bag. It took him a month of hard work, hand-cutting and -stitching everything—and he’s been refining the process for his handmade Americana goods ever since. In fact, he still goes through dozens of prototypes before he finds the perfect design. We always thought that 12 bags were better than one anyway.
