Over 3000 miles apart, Thayer and her pop Joe have a creative process that’s cross-country, Thayer driving the creative vision from San Francisco, and Joe creating all of the fine feathers in his barn in Vermont. Each feather is created from specialty glass (including wonderfully-textured Youghiogheny [pronounced yo-uh-gey-nee]) and silvery, dark patina or bright copper veining. The father-daughter team thinks carefully about the personality of each bird a feather represents as well as the colors and textures feel the most like each bird. The result is a magical, mystical object that just might channel the spirit of the bird it’s based on.
